Our municipality achieves the status of Smart Tourism Destination
The Nuevo Baztán City Council has received the Diagnostic Report prepared by SEGITTUR, marking a decisive step in the implementation of the Smart Tourism Destination (STD) methodology, promoted by the Spanish State Secretariat for Tourism.
With this recognition, valid until 20 March 2029, Nuevo Baztán is now officially recognised as an “Adhered Smart Tourism Destination”. This confirms that the municipality has formally begun implementing this forward-looking model. It places Nuevo Baztán firmly on the path towards a tourism strategy built on governance, sustainability, accessibility, innovation and technology.
Key achievements and current indicators include:
In terms of overall compliance, the City Council has reached an initial 25.9% fulfilment of the requirements established by the STD model, based on the following parameters:
Technological strengths: The highest score has been achieved in the Technology pillar (35.3%), particularly in infrastructure management and connectivity.
Governance and Sustainability: Significant progress has been made in transparency and participation (49.0%), as well as in the conservation and enhancement of the municipality’s valuable cultural heritage (47.5%).
Current tourism impact: Nuevo Baztán welcomes more than 176,000 visitors each year, generating a strong economic impact and supporting շուրջ 200 direct jobs within the municipality.
Looking ahead: next steps and roadmap
While this represents an important milestone, SEGITTUR’s report also outlines key areas for improvement. The action plan for the coming years will focus on:
Accessibility: This is the area with the greatest potential for improvement (10.8%). Specific plans will be developed to ensure that streets, transport and tourism resources are fully accessible and enjoyable for everyone, without barriers.
Innovation: The municipality will foster an “innovation ecosystem” (currently at 9.5%), engaging local businesses and promoting creative solutions to address social and environmental challenges linked to tourism.
Citizen engagement: A Tourism Board or Council will be created, giving residents and private stakeholders a direct voice in tourism-related decisions. Communication will also be strengthened through regular newsletters and in-person meetings.
Sustainability and mobility: Efforts will focus on improving demand-responsive public transport and promoting sustainable options such as cycling, alongside better visitor flow management to prevent overcrowding in key public spaces and heritage sites.
This marks an important first step as Nuevo Baztán continues to enhance its tourism model for the benefit of both residents and visitors.
