Last Saturday and Sunday, 11 and 12 October, Nuevo Baztán experienced an unforgettable weekend to mark the 302nd anniversary of its Foundation. Residents and visitors enjoyed a full cultural, artistic and participatory programme that filled the streets with history, creativity and emotion.

From early morning, the 7th Quick Painting Contest and the children’s “Antonio Español” Contest placed art at the heart of the celebration. The Palace Market also opened its doors, offering crafts, traditional flavours and a unique atmosphere.

Over the two days we enjoyed themed exhibitions and an 18th-century military camp that transported the public back in time. Workshops in blacksmithing, stained glass, soap-making and more introduced traditional trades to young and old alike.

On Saturday evening, from around 20:30, one of the key moments of the weekend took place: a glass-blowing demonstration and show by Diego, a master artisan, followed by a fire performance that captivated visitors until nearly 10 p.m.

The performing programme included puppets, street theatre, magic and dramatised guided tours. Live music, parades and period dances brought every corner of the town to life. We also enjoyed popular tastings: a delicious serving of potatoes with chistorra prepared by the Nuevo Baztán–Veauche Twinning Association, inspired by our Navarrese roots, and on Sunday, shepherd’s migas prepared by the Senior Centre, highlighting our rural past and present.

On Sunday, the Quick Painting prizes were awarded, once again showing how versatile this art form is. In addition, a tribute was paid to one of our distinguished painters, Antonio Español, who currently has an exhibition in the Palace Exhibition Halls.
