A moving close to the Foundation Festivities with art, recognition and tradition in Nuevo Baztán

17 October 2025

The second day of the Foundation Festivities included several important events. At midday, the solemn Mass was celebrated to commemorate the founding of the Parish of San Francisco Javier. For the first time, the “San Francisco Javier Choir” took part—a new local initiative. We wish them all the best and hope they continue their work just as they have done so far.

The courtyard of the Juan de Goyeneche Palace hosted, this Sunday, the awards ceremony for the 7th Quick Painting Contest, dedicated this year to the theme “The historical, cultural and landscape values of Nuevo Baztán”.

Mayor Gemma Pacheco, together with the Councillor for Culture, Rosario García, presented the prizes to the winners:

  • 1st prize (€1,000): Justo Antonio Paniagua, from Meco.
  • 2nd prize (€500): Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, from Alovera.
  • 3rd prize (€300): Pilar Sánchez, from Alcalá de Henares.

During the same event, a moving tribute was paid to the painter Antonio Español, who received an Honorary Award in recognition of his artistic career and his connection to the town. The Mayor presented him with a commemorative plaque, in a particularly emotional moment for all those present.

As a final flourish to the festivities, local craftswoman Cinta Pla presented the Mayor with a handmade replica of the façade of the Palace–Church complex of Juan de Goyeneche, a symbol of Nuevo Baztán’s historic heritage.
