The Interpretation Centre presents the exhibition “Echoes of the Baroque. The soundtrack of Goyeneche’s Madrid”. A journey to the 18th century through the music that was heard and developed at that time. 

If we travelled to the Madrid of Juan de Goyeneche, our founder, we would be surprised by the constant presence of music. Music filled every moment and place where life unfolded. Performed in theatres, churches, streets and squares, as well as in palace and domestic rooms, music was essential in all court celebrations, processions, religious ceremonies (military or civil) and in all popular festivities. 

This exhibition aims to showcase music in Madrid in Goyeneche’s time, during the splendour of a Baroque period already moving towards new styles. We will be able to discover multiple documents and objects that are not usually accessible to the public, such as scores, instruments, treatises, documents, librettos, fans, costumes, engravings and plans. 

The itinerary is structured around the main spheres in which musical practice developed: music in the theatre (opera and popular theatre), religious music, instrumental music and dance. Thanks to the collaboration of public institutions and private collections, visitors will be able to approach this essential legacy, accompanied by the evocative sound of the music of the period. 

The curator of this exhibition is Judith Ortega, who belongs to the Department of Musicology at the Complutense University of Madrid.

This art exhibition can be enjoyed in the Palace Rooms from 1 April to 29 June during the Tourist Office opening hours as follows: 

Tuesday to Friday: 11:00–14:00 and 16:00–18:00.

Saturdays: 11:00–14:00 and 16:00–19:00. 

Sundays: 11:00–14:00.

 

In addition, over these three months there will be two musical activities that will complement all the information we can find in the Palace Rooms. 

1. Concert “Flowers of Music. Suites and Sonatas” by “Ars Combinatoria”. It will be on Saturday 17 May at 12:30 in the Church of San Francisco Javier. Free activity with open access until full.
