Centennial Elm of Nuevo Baztán
Description
José Benito Churriguera, designer of the entire Nuevo Baztán complex, completed the project with a row of elms on the main thoroughfare to provide shade from the sun and adorn the surroundings. However, they disappeared due to the Dutch elm disease that swept through Europe.
In the past, this row of elms formed a tunnel right at the entrance of the town, before revealing the great Goyeneche Palace. The only survivor that has reached the present day is The Elm, which survived the plague. In addition to being declared a singular tree, it has been genetically studied for its immunity to fungi and Dutch elm disease.
