Almunia Fountain

Almunia Fountain

Description

1.5km from the historic center, this fountain is located on the Cerro de la Almunia, from which it takes its name, and still belongs to the Historic Complex of Nuevo Baztán. Although it once belonged to Villar, Juan de Goyeneche annexed that part of the area along with the tile factory and the pastureland.

The fountain is composed of several elements: the access passage to the spouts, the parapets or retaining walls, the front wall through which the spouts open, and the two upper and lower ponds. It would have originally had a roof, but this was lost due to the fragility of the original materials.

The first existing record of this fountain and its use dates back to 1856, known for the good quality of the water and its apparently mineral-medicinal properties. Later, the spring would be exploited as a spa, although for a short time. It was used as a spring, watering place, for bathing, and as a laundry adapted in its construction. Additionally, the water from the fountain was then directed to the field, aiding in irrigation distribution.
